Alaskan Sled Dogs with Santa
As December approaches, with all the associated festivities, there is one subject that is always a bit touchy around the kennel... Reindeer! “Reindeer,” you say. “What about reindeer? We love' em!”
Well sure you do! Everybody does, after all they are Santa's favorite. But do you know why? Do you know the ancient story of how sled dogs and reindeer once vied for Santa's attention? Have you ever heard of the great mythological debate they waged against one another? Each championing their respective abilities for the honor of pulling Santa's sleigh? Not to many people have! But every sled dog has. And it burns deep in their hearts!
This program goes beyond the typical Holiday story time theme and delves heavily into the math and science of how sled, or sleighs, work!
We begin it all with the backstory of how reindeer came to pull Santa's sleigh.
From there, we allow both sides (reindeer and sled dogs) to restate their respective arguments for why they should be pulling the sleigh- much of which focuses on the physics of how sleds work.
Students will be asked to help with these demonstration, ask question, make counter arguments, and eventually decide if Santa should reconsider his decision!

The first week of the Sleuth begins with students working from a web-based platform to learn the specific skills they will use the following week to solve the mystery. Week two is where the puzzle really begins, students will continue using the the web-based platform they are used to but they will also meet with Kigluait investigators daily through videoconferencing technology. The third and final week will be devoted to solving the mystery and understanding how the natural processes occurring in remote Alaska relate and affect the students own day to day lives.

Mystery Lights in the North
Your task as a super sleuther is to determine what the strange mystery lights are and to determine their effects, both positive and negative, on the local fishing. There have been several sightings of strange lights in arctic waters. Sightings usually occur between the hours of 7p.m.-6 a.m. in both open water and on shorelines. Persons reporting the sighting say that they often appear as flickers of light and then they are gone. In addition, there have been statements that they are greenish-blue in color. Several of the initial cases have been dismissed due to the suspicion and validity of the reports. However, the sightings seem to have begun to become more frequent occurrences and there have been some concerns from communities where the sightings have been made by a wide number of people. Coinciding with these complaints has been a concern for the lack of fishing in the local areas.

The sailors on the barge explained that there was a tie-down on the freight that had snapped, and some of the freight went over board.
